Loan Payments & EMI
Split each loan EMI into principal (reduces what you owe) and interest (a borrowing expense) in one step.
One Monthly Payment Split Into Two Components
Single withdrawal from Cash Checking account
Moves cash into the Loan account, directly lowering the remaining loan balance you still owe.
Categorized under Loan Interest. Tracked as an expense on monthly cash flow summaries.
When you pay an installment on a mortgage, car loan, student loan, or personal loan (often called an Equated Monthly Installment, or EMI), the payment does two different jobs:
- Principal: part of the payment reduces the loan balance you still owe.
- Interest (and fees): part is the lender’s charge for borrowing.
If you record the whole EMI as an expense, spending looks too high and the remaining debt is wrong. If you record the whole payment as only moving money onto the loan, you hide the real cost of borrowing.
Nobleway’s Loan payments workflow records both parts in one step.
How Loan Payments Are Split
| Part | Where the money goes | Effect on what you owe | Effect on monthly spending |
|---|---|---|---|
| Principal | Transfer from cash to the loan account | The loan balance goes down | Does not count as an expense (you are paying back money you already borrowed) |
| Interest | Expense from the cash account | Does not reduce the loan | Counts as an expense, with a category such as Loan interest |
- Moves money from a cash account to the loan account.
- Lowers the remaining loan balance (the principal you still owe).
- Is not new household consumption.
- Posts an expense from the same cash account.
- Needs an expense category (for example, Bills & Utilities / Loan interest).
- Does not reduce what you still owe on the loan.
- Shows up in monthly spending as the cost of borrowing.
A Concrete Example
A car loan still owes $15,000. The monthly EMI is $1,200: $900 principal and $300 interest.
Because the loan is a liability, household net worth is cash minus the remaining loan.
| Balance or metric | Before | After | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank checking (cash) | $5,000 | $3,800 | −$1,200 (full payment) |
| Car loan remaining | $15,000 | $14,100 | −$900 (principal only) |
| Household monthly expenses | $0 | $300 | +$300 (interest only) |
| Household net worth | −$10,000 | −$10,300 | −$300 (cash dropped by more than the loan dropped) |
Debt falls by $900, cash falls by $1,200, and only the $300 interest is recorded as spending.
Recording a Loan Payment in Nobleway
- In the sidebar, open Loan payments (
/app/loan-payments). - Select the loan account.
- Select the source account (checking or savings paying the installment).
- Enter the total payment (for example,
1200.00). - Enter the principal portion (for example,
900.00). - Enter the interest portion (for example,
300.00). - Select an interest category.
- Confirm the payment date.
- Click Record loan payment.
Supported Payment Types
- Standard EMI (principal + interest): Both amounts are positive. Principal reduces the loan; interest is an expense.
- Principal-only prepayment (interest = 0): Extra payment to reduce debt faster. The full amount is a transfer; no expense.
- Interest-only (principal = 0): During an interest-only period. The full amount is an expense; the loan balance stays the same.
What Nobleway checks
- Principal + interest equals the total payment.
- Principal is not larger than the current loan balance.
- The cash account can cover the total payment.
- Cash and loan accounts use the same currency.
- If interest is greater than zero, an expense category is required.
Managing and Editing Loan Payments
- Go to Loan payments (
/app/loan-payments). - Open Payment history at the bottom.
- Click the payment to change.
- Update the split or date and save.
Nobleway updates both parts together so cash, loan balance, and interest stay in sync.
